FAQs

What does HO scale mean?

When comparing model locomotives and other model trains, and deciding which ones to buy, you’ll find that most manufacturers make HO model trains. Whilst HO is the most common size available today, it’s actually a smaller version of the Zero Scale, also known as the O Scale, which was the most popular size from the 1920s to after WWII.

A German toy manufacturer created the O Scale at the beginning of the 20th century, using a 1:48 ratio between the original train and the model. HO refers to Half-O because it is approximately one-half the size of the O Scale.

What is the most popular model train size?

Today, HO is by far the most popular size. Whether you’re just starting to build your dream railway scene or you’ve been a hobbyist for years, you’ll find that you have the broadest selection of model trains and railway model accessories if you choose the HO Scale.

How do you find the scale when you buy model trains?

When shopping from model train stores online or anytime you visit model train shops in Australia, be sure to check that you’re getting the correct model size. You can find the scale in the product name after the manufacturer name and product number.

If it’s not in the name or the product specifications, ask the model train shop what the scale is. At Metro Hobbies, we’re more than happy to assist you if you have any questions. Feel free to reach out for help when you come into our stores or shop online.

To make buying model trains for sale even easier, we also offer a variety of payment methods including direct bank deposit, credit cards, and Paypal. We accept ZipPay and LayBuy.
