In 1957, the Maritime Self-Defense Force adopted the anti-submarine patrol aircraft version of Sikorsky S-58 as HSS-1 For this reason, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries produced 20 knockdown aircraft over a period of five years starting in 1958, of which aircraft registration number JA7202 was transferred to the Japan Coast Guard and installed on the Antarctic research vessel "Soya."
JA7202 supported wintering observations by piston transport between Syowa Station and proved the practicality of helicopters in polar expeditions ahead of the world.
Soya is also known as the first ship in Japan to operate a helicopter.
