The first prototype D.520 first took off on October 2, 1938 and was powered by a new liquid-cooled engine Hispano-Suiza 12Y-21 with an output of 890 horsepower (660 kW). During the flight tests, however, we managed to reach a speed of only 480 km / h, which was much less than the expected 520 km / h. The original prototype and two other airframes were equipped in 1939 with a new sliding cover and larger tail surfaces. These prototypes were armed with a 20 mm cannon firing through the hollow shaft of the propeller (this feature later appeared in many German and Russian projects) and two 7.5 mm machine guns in small capsules under the wings. Flight tests went relatively well, so in March 1939 the company won a contract for 200 serial machines powered by a newer engine Hispano-Suiza 12Y-31.
