The Kiha 47-8000 series is a vehicle that has undergone engine renewal of the Kiha 47-0 series inherited by JR Kyushu.

Due to differences in the timing of the renewal work, there are various differences in appearance, such as the presence or absence of louvers on the side of the car body, the presence or absence of a toilet window, and the presence or absence of a water tank on the roof.

The "Romancing Saga" project, a collaboration project between Saga Prefecture and Square Enix's RPG series "Saga", has been ongoing since 2014.

From October 2022, all 16 cars of the Karatsu Vehicle Center, including 7 Kiha 125 cars and 9 Kiha 47 cars that run on the Karatsu Line and Chikuhi Line in Saga Prefecture, will be wrapped in a different design and will be in operation as the "Romancing Saga Train".
