The 103 series is a commuter train that first appeared in 1963, and over 3,400 cars were manufactured and are still in service today. The emerald green 103 series was introduced on the Joban Line in 1967, and on the Narita Line in 1973.When the Joban Line was quadrupled in 1971, the trains were converted to eight-car formations, but to alleviate congestion, they were reverted back to ten-car formations the following year. When the Narita Line was electrified in 1973, more cars were transferred and added, and the top-numbered KuMoha 103 series cars were transferred in and attracted attention. October 2023 will mark the 50th anniversary of the electrification of the Abiko-Narita section.
