The 117 series was introduced in 1979 to replace the 153 series that had been operating as "Special Rapid Service" in the Keihanshin area due to their aging. The four-car formations transferred to the Okayama area in 1992 were painted in the "Sunliner" Rapid Service color, but since 2010 they have been gradually changed to a single yellow color.
