The F/A-18E/F "Super Hornet" fighter is actually an enlarged upgrade model of the F/A-18C/D "Hornet". Its earliest design concept came from the "Bumblebee" 2000 project proposed by McDonnell Douglas in the early 1980s. The concept of the Hornet 2000 is an upgraded version of the F/A-18C/D with an increased area wing. The fuselage is lengthened to carry more fuel and a more powerful engine. The fuselage of the F/A-18E/F is extended by 860 mm, and the added space is used to accommodate the improved avionics system and carry more fuel. The wing area has increased by 25%. However, the F/A-18E/F "Super Hornet" has a 42% increase in structure compared to the F/A-18C/D "Hornet" due to design optimization. Using GE's F414 engine, the engine evolved from the F404 used by the F/A-18C/D "Hornet" and increased thrust by 35%. This allows the Super Hornet to carry more unconsumed fuel and weapons back to the aircraft carrier after the combat mission is over. The term is called "return". The F/A-18E/F has a "return" capability of up to 4,100 kg. The F/A-18E/F Super Hornet fighter first flew in 1995. It was put into mass production in September 1997. The F/A-18E/F "Super Hornet" entered the US Navy in 1999 and has completely replaced the F-14 "Tomcat" fighter since 2006.
