Technology today offers many modern innovations to make your modelling experience truly enjoyable. On our shelves we have many classic model car kit brands like AMT, MPC, Revell and more which have been around for some time. Times have changed, and now we have many modern, high-tech model kit brands like Meng joining the quality brands like Tamiya, Hasegawa and Fujimi in producing some excellent modelling subjects. But what makes a great model car kit? Today we take a closer look at a Meng 1/24 kit which captures all the features of a great modern kit.
The 2019 BMW Z4 is developed based on the CLAR platform, has received many changes in its appearance. The recent Meng BMW Z4 M40i is a 1/24 injection model kit officially licensed by BMW, and admittedly this is not a subject that can be found in older kit brand offerings. This makes the kit a worthwhile addition right away to any modern car collection!
Meng, as usual, has used modern slide-mold technology in casting the parts and components of this kit. As you can see the bucket seats come as single pieces, and the tyres have a rich detail on their tread. The clamshell fit of the body and the detailing underneath the cannot be duplicated by older injection molds for sure.
Included in the kit are photo etch detail parts for the interior, emblems and such, as well as a vinyl strip emulating the fabric texture of a seat belt, an amazing detail addition. This is a highlight for the kit, as oftentimes older kits do not have the same level of offerings out of the box.
Inside the box is a set of pre-cut sticker masks for the windshield and windows, which is an incredible add-on to make painting easy. There is also a set of foil stickers to place on to the rear view mirrors, an excellent touch. Did we mention that the anti-misting grill on the rear window is also reproduced?
The kit instructions reveal how much computer assistance was given to planning the kit. The finished model will be 180mm long, 84mm wide and 55mm high. Everything is planned out, from the sharp detail on the wheel rims to the steerable front wheels to the soft top to be raised or lowered. An amazing kit!
So there you have it, a micro-summary of what makes a modern model car kit truly modern! If you're keen to learn more about the basics of model car kits, watch our video primer here:
