Tamiya's new BBX ushers in a new chapter to the long legacy of Tamiya Radio Control Car Kits. Since the 1970s and 1980s Tamiya (along with Kyosho and even Team Associated) had led the way with classics like the Hornet, Grasshopper and Frog, names of legendary RC cars which will always be fondly remembered (and they are still here!)

BBX

The BBX, the first with the new 2023 BB-01 chassis, is a new design that took inspiration from the Tamiya catalog of iconic 2WD off-road buggies. This 1/10 2WD off-road buggy model features a combination of classic design and modern performance - and its here! We unbox one to have a look at what's inside - watch the video below!

A brand-new chassis, harkening back to the 1980s sand rail dune buggies, is a hybrid monocoque-roll cage. It boasts of a long rear trailing arm suspension inspired by modern UTV’s.

Roll cage

The grey roll cage is cast in two segments, and a solid chassis bottom is of tough plastic. The components are designed to take an impact, yet if broken are replaceable with modular parts.

Wheels

The car's design itself is modern, but you can still see the tip of the hat to 80s designs. The wheels are chrome plated - but the ribbed/square pin tyres are high performance and there are foam insets included in the box!

Ball differentials, metal bearings for the wheels, long trailing suspension arms, even light pods to install (LEDs not included) on to the 6 part body shell (again, a modular replacement if it gets broken - well done Tamiya) - these are all excellent innovations which are all included in the box.

Stickers

Yet the retro feel of a Tamiya classic is in this kit's DNA. A new body is designed by famed Japanese artist Atsushi Arino uses a classic 1980’s inspired livery with the wheels and tires' look, and even the stickers are looking like a Hornet's!

We love the look of this kit so much, we can't wait to get started building. Tune in and keep an eye out for the finished result! If you want to build along, get yours here. >
