This is the Kyosho 1/12 Fantom four wheel drive On Road Pan Car, the ninth edition to the Kyosho Legendary Series. This pan racing car is four wheel drive, has 3-point suspension and 4-wheel independent suspension, 4WD ladder-chain drive + front one-way bearing system that normally didn’t produce front drive but drove the inside wheel when power was applied through turns for stable cornering and minimal drive loss with a chain drive transmission.
It has superior cornering speed and stability, even on low grip surfaces It has been painted in Tamiya Spray PS-17, backed with PS-21, Park Green, Normally it would be painted in white, as that's what the box art recommends. However, we've gone with Metallic Green, and I am a huge fan of this colour which reminds me of the Tamiya Top Force buggies.
I've also built in the optional rear wing ( Kyosho EFW001G Wing) which adds a bit of bling, and more importantly, downforce, which can be adjusted in height to create different levels of grip.Probably the most difficult part was masking the inside driver's windscreen which I did with liquid mask, sprayed on first, then trimmed and then painted over with the green.
Inside the car is a PowerHD R6 mini servo, a standard stick pack Lipo battery with the Dean's plug. The batteries are held down with battery tape which is provided in the box. I have made an additional 3d printed chain guard to go with the car, which will add another level of protection for the battery and chassis. Saying that, if built correctly and the chain installed with the right tension, there should be no contact on the battery or on the car.
The servo is around the eight or nine kg mark. We have got this set up with a Vintage 13t Yokomo brushed motor that I had in my stash.
This lovely build is synonymous with Kyosho quality. All the parts, nuts and bolts and metal parts are of superior quality, and it all comes together beautifully and quite satisfyingly. I'm very happy to be running it very lightly at this stage, just up and down the driveway. It is a very fast little car and I'm looking forward to giving it plenty when the weather gets a bit better. And certainly one of my favorite ever builds from Kyosho!
If you're keen, you may find the Kyosho Fantom EP 4WD EXT CRC2 online, a similar build and next one up in the series, currently available with some lovely upgrade parts in it!
